Iron Ore. Iron Ore is mined in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, from opencast operations, at the Khumani Iron Ore Mine, which is located near the town of Kathu, and Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine which is located outside the town of Postmasburg.
Sishen mine extracts the lump ore from a large haematite ore body hosted by a Lake Superiortype banded iron formation (BIF) called Kuruman Formation of the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The lump to fine ratio of the Sishen ore is 6040.
The Sishen Iron Ore Mine is situated 49 kilometres west of Kuruman in the Northern Cape. The contract commenced in April 2006 and runs until December 2017. The contract scope includes removal of 50 million tons of waste material per annum. The client is Anglo American Kumba Resources Limited who has been mining at Sishen for 60 years.
